Covid-19 Response

foamy soap bubbles as hands are washed

Like all of us, Genesis Trust is adapting quickly to the demands of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The safety and wellbeing of our clients, staff and volunteers is our top priority. Those who are homeless are already at greatly increased risk of disease because of ongoing health challenges.

At the Gateway Centre, we have changed the way we work to ensure maximum hygiene and minimum social contact so that we can continue to provide vital access to food, clothing, showers and laundry facilities. We are observing the hand-washing and cleaning protocols, and we have extended the hours of access for Lifeline clients so that people can use facilities whilst keeping a safe distance from one another.

One of the challenges we face is that clients’ mental health conditions can contribute to unhealthy behaviours. The belief that Covid-19 is just a conspiracy, or a fatalistic ‘what will be will be’ approach makes it difficult for some people to adopt a lifestyle of frequent hand cleansing.

From Tuesday 24th March we are temporarily re-locating our Soup Run to the Gateway Centre, where it can operate as a take-away service, as this provides a more controlled environment to enable better social distancing.

For our Life Skills clients, we have set up services online to enable clients to stay connected with one another as this is so vital for mental health.

Much of our work involves serving people whose housing situation is precarious, through advocacy and advice, and we are working on ways to retain this service through the current crisis, mindful that the economic effects of this pandemic could lead to more people being vulnerably housed.

Our Bath Foodbank is continuing to operate, with some alterations to its service. See here for details.

We are mindful that this is a hugely challenging time, and that many of our supporters may be facing financial uncertainty. Despite this we have been amazed at the kindness and generosity we are seeing in our community.
