‘The feeling was amazing when coming out the plane, the wind hitting you as you go down felt awesome and knowing I was doing it for an amazing charity made it even better.’
Skydiver Steph
Yes, I understand. Your first thought about doing a skydive will probably range somewhere between uneasiness to absolute terror. You are most likely scared of heights. So am I. I get stressed looking over the side of a building. I have done two skydives now (no hypocrisy here!) and it’s actually the fear of heights that makes a skydive even more exhilarating.
We have had seven Genesis Trust skydives so far since 2022. Almost everyone has been glowing afterwards and excited to do another. I will admit, there have been two people who afterwards said something like, ‘I’m glad I did it, but probably won’t do it again’ but they are the rare ones and they still enjoyed it.
On Saturday 21st June, we had another seven brave skydivers participate in a fundraising jump for Genesis . . . and all were glowing afterwards. I really do enjoy seeing their excitement after the jump. Thank you to Steph, Jacob, Daryll, Alistair, Angie, Kambua and Arthur for raising funds to support homeless and vulnerable people in our community.
What’s the day like?
When you arrive you make your way to the registration tablets. Once registered, you go through a brief orientation about the day, get kitted up in a jumpsuit and harness and then go through some training. Their goal is to make the experience from beginning to end as relaxing as possible. They know that people will be nervous.
We have done all our skydives at Go Skydive at the Old Sarum Airfield near Salisbury. The people who work for Go Skydive are so friendly. I’ve been able to get to know some of the tandem professionals who work there and many of them have jumped over 20,000 times . . . and they are still alive!
One day I was talking to Henk who is one of the tandem professionals. He told me that they pick people to become professional tandem jumpers not on their skydiving experience but on their friendly personality. And then that person goes through two years of extensive training and at least 800 jumps before they can jump with a customer.
What if I have a medical issue?
Obviously, that is something that needs to be taken into consideration. You will need to speak to your doctor if you have any concerns. On the day, you will sign a medical waiver stating that you are in good enough health to participate. Also, if you are heavier than 18 stone including clothes, you can’t participate.
But age or past health concerns do not necessarily exclude you. When I did the Genesis Skydive in April 2024, there was an 85-year-old lady skydiving who had recovered from cancer. We’ve also had a 75-year-old lady jump for Genesis. The only age limit is that you must be 16 years of age to skydive in the UK.

Listen to what Angie said, ‘I am so happy and pleased I could support Genesis and extremely thankful to everyone who donated. Skydiving was a wonderful experience, 10/10. Would recommend.’

Why don’t you combine an adventure with supporting homeless and vulnerable people in your community? A challenge with an impact.
