Between April and June, six of our clients completed The Life Course. This is a ten-week course which Genesis runs for clients who are in recovery from addiction or are managing mental ill-health. There are two sessions a week and for many who attend, making this level of commitment is a first step to positive change in their lives.

‘I was worried about joining a group of people I didn’t know, but Jill and Loz were reassuring.  The things we learnt were helpful, I feel I learnt so much.’ – Life Course Participant

We use two measuring systems to see how effective The Life Course is for our clients and to help us identify next steps for each client. The WEMWBS system showed a significant reduction in low wellbeing and increase in wellbeing overall. 86% rated the course as ‘excellent’ and 90% have noticed a positive change after taking part.

‘This course has helped me come out of my shell and has helped with my confidence.  The open discussions helped me with understanding others points of view and I liked listening to the group and learning from them.’ – Life Course Participant

We also use the Recovery Star to measure clients’ attitudes and wellbeing before and after the course. Before the course the readings told us:

  • guests don’t like the way things are for them.
  • they want things to change, but don’t know how to.
  • Clients are inclined to want others to sort things out for them.
  • They know they can’t carry on as they are.

These results indicate they are ready for The Life Course as they recognise the need for change in their lives.

‘It was really good to have a focus each week. Somewhere I could come and talk.  I like the fact the group wasn’t too big.  I was feeling very low but felt happier after a session.’ – Life Course Participant

Recovery Star recordings after the course showed a change in attitude which reflects, ‘it’s up to me as well’. They started to believe that they are capable. It’s a difficult stage to be in and they need a lot of further support as they embed doing things on their own and instil confidence in themselves.

‘Once I got to know the group, I enjoyed talking to people – I spend a lot of time on my own. Jill made me feel welcome and explained things clearly.’ – Life Course Participant

During the last session on of the participants brought in a homemade a cake to share. Then together they each made these crochet pouches (pictured) which we placed a marble in. This came about as one in the group had made one and held it during sessions when she was feeling anxious or overwhelmed. It helped her channel nervous or excess energy. She told the group how it helped her and now the whole group has one. It was special to share this activity together.

Now the Life Course has ended, how are we continuing to support these clients who have learnt so much?

The Life Course sits within an interlinked framework of support for clients who come to us. Genesis Life Projects offers a variety of smaller courses, one-to-one support and meals shared with clients and staff. All of these are opportunities for Life Course participants to engage with other clients and staff in a setting that works for them.

Jill Sullivan, who runs The Life Course and works full time at Genesis Life Projects said, ‘Life Course clients are now being supported within other areas of Genesis Life Projects with the aim of addressing their individual needs further as they become more independent. I am still seeing many of the clients who took part as they participate in other courses and groups which is really encouraging.’
