Throughout the month of September hundreds of charities and thousands of people around the world are celebrating gifts left to charity in Wills.

It’s a collective opportunity for charities to say ‘thank you’ to all their supporters who have decided to leave a gift in their Will, and also to spread the word about this incredible way for you, the supporter, to see the things you care about last long into the future.

At Genesis Trust, we have been exploring the idea of Gift in Wills. What impact would this kind of gift have on our work with vulnerable and disadvantaged adults in the Bath area? How will those gifts make a difference and why do we need this kind of support?

To help answer these questions we thought it best to talk with those who have already decided to support us in this way.

Volunteer and fundraiser, John Acton, gives up his time to work in our small office, helping us raise funds through our Genesis Curios website. He kindly shared with us that he and his wife had chosen to leave a gift in their Will to Genesis Trust.

They first got to know Genesis Trust through our Furniture Shop and liked the local focus and saw how our values aligned with their own. This was the first time they had decided to leave a gift to a charity in their Wills and it was the personal involvement they had had with staff and volunteers that helped them make the decision.

To get a slightly different perspective on Gift in Wills we spoke with our founder and a long-serving Trustee, Peter Heywood. For Peter, a big part of what makes Genesis Trust special is the focus on community. Local people working together to create a strong and thriving community. He shared with us how leaving a gift in his Will fits into the bigger picture of Genesis Trust,

“I’m glad that I’ll be making one more gift to Genesis after I die, to help people in need in the Bath area – that what I care about during my life can be helped to continue after my death.”

You can hear more from both John and Peter in our video focusing on Gift in Wills.

In this month of honouring legacies, we want to say a huge thank you to all our supporters who have left or are thinking about leaving a gift in their Will to continue the work of Genesis Trust. Nick Mayo, our CEO says,

“It is deeply encouraging when our work to serve the vulnerable and marginalised in our community is considered worthy of an investment that is a legacy. The legacies we have received have made a genuine difference and we will do our very best to honour such generosity. Thank you.”
